If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities all over the world get their perfect smiles, veneers are often the answer. While they’re certainly popular among the Hollywood elite, they’re also a way for just about anyone to get the smile of their dreams!

Veneers can’t really be defined as just one thing. Many of the things you may think are absolutely true about veneers actually aren’t certainties.

For example, while veneers are commonly made from porcelain, that isn’t always the case. There is another kind of veneer that may be better suited to your needs—here’s what you should know about them.

Composite Veneers, The Number One Alternative

While porcelain veneers are excellent, composite veneers may be a better pick for some people. As their name would imply, they’re constructed from a tooth-colored composite resin, made from a specific kind of acrylic. If you’ve ever had a dental filling, this material is very similar, though the substance used for veneers is tuned and polished to be more aesthetic.

Advantages of Composite over Porcelain

While it’s the less popular option in general, there are some serious benefits that composite veneers have over porcelain. The biggest one, and one of the main reasons that people choose them, is the cost. They’re considerably cheaper than porcelain.

However, they’re also applied differently than porcelain is—they don’t require the dentist to remove any enamel. This makes them easier to apply and means that they’re reversible.

Points for Porcelain

That said, there are also plenty of reasons to prefer porcelain over composite. For one, the former is a little bit more durable—while both are strong, composite is a little bit prone to chipping. Most people also tend to prefer the aesthetics of porcelain. It has a little bit of transparency that makes them look slightly more natural than composite does.

Ultimately, both materials have their benefits, and which one is best for you ultimately comes down to personal preference. If you’re interested in veneers, talk to your dentist and they’ll be able to help you make the decision.
