There’s an important trip coming up that you have been planning for months. However, you just found out from your dentist that you have a tooth that needs to be removed, and you can’t afford to delay the procedure. Will it be okay for you to fly after your tooth extraction? Here’s what you need to know so that you can adjust your plans accordingly.

Is Flying Immediately After a Tooth Extraction Dangerous?

Dentists typically advise against getting on an airplane immediately after having a tooth removed. It’s not necessarily unsafe, but the change in altitude and cabin pressure can make your post-extraction discomfort significantly worse. You could also have a higher risk of developing a dry socket.

It is generally best to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after your tooth extraction before flying. Giving yourself plenty of rest during this time can help ensure that there aren’t any problems during the initial stages of the recovery process.

What If You Need to Fly Right After a Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes you may simply not have the luxury of delaying your trip. As such, if you find yourself flying shortly following your tooth extraction, it’s recommended that you follow these steps:

  • Pack over-the-counter pain relievers in your carry-on luggage so that you can manage your discomfort.
  • You may still need to change the gauze over the extraction site at regular intervals. As such, bring plenty of extra gauze with you onto the plane.
  • Consider packing a cold compress in order to keep your swelling down.
  • If you eat anything during your flight, remember to stick to soft foods such as yogurt. Avoid anything crunchy, spicy, or acidic.
  • You will want to stay hydrated, so bring a refillable bottle of water with you. Make sure that the water isn’t too hot or too cold.
  • Try to stay relaxed during your flight. You may consider bringing headphones so that you can listen to music on your phone. You can also keep a lightweight blanket and a travel pillow with your carry-on luggage.

The tips listed above can go a long way toward helping you stay comfortable when flying after a tooth extraction. To make sure you’re as prepared as possible, don’t forget to tell your dentist about your travel plans; they will be able to give you additional advice to make sure that your recovery process stays on track.
